Expert Electronics Design.

From Concept to Production.

I'm a freelance electronics design engineer based just outside of Edinburgh, with over 22 years of hands-on experience delivering robust, production-ready solutions — from early proof-of-concept through to certification and manufacture.

Much of this experience comes from working within fast-paced consultancy environments, covering both analogue and digital design across a wide range of applications. These include consumer electronics, medical devices, spacecraft systems, industrial control, robotics, renewable energy systems, lab instrumentation, white goods, motion capture, agritech, and safety-critical sensors.

My focus is on maximising the chances of first-time board bring-up success — helping you reduce project risk, accelerate development, and reach the market sooner.

What We Offer

Requirements Capture

We offer a spreadsheet-based requirements capture system, grounded in best-practice, process-based engineering principles.

Developed and refined over many years, it's been widely praised and adopted by clients and partners, it gives you a real edge - helping you get things right from the start.

Proof-of-Concept Builds

We can rapidly develop proof-of-concept prototypes using off-the-shelf components such as Arduinos, sensor modules, and breakout boards.

This approach allows for quick testing of core functionality and validation of design ideas before committing to full custom hardware. It’s a cost-effective way to explore feasibility, demonstrate concepts to stakeholders, and accelerate early-stage development, without the commitment of a custom PCB design.

Simulation

We use circuit simulation tools to analyse and validate critical parts of a design before any hardware is built. This helps optimise component selection, verify performance, and catch potential issues early—saving time and cost before committing to PCB fabrication.

That said, there's still a place for hands-on testing, and when it makes sense, we’re just as comfortable reaching for a breadboard to build and test circuits in real life!

Circuit Design

We're able to offer a wide range of circuit design expertise, across a wide range of both analogue and digital domains:

Digital:
• Embedded System design across a wide range of MCU platforms - STM32, SAMD21 + other ARM Cortex based MCUs, ESP32, PIC etc.

• Application Processors running Linux/Android, including NXP iMX6.

• FPGA implementation with Xilinx and Altera devices.

• Memory Interfaces, including Serial, uSD, eMMC and DDR2/3.

• RS232, RS422, I2C, I2S, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet (GBit), LVDS, PCIe Gen2, CAN + many others!

• User IO, including rotary encoders, buttons, touch displays etc.

• 2D/3D imaging system design, including 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera designs.

Analogue:

• Analogue design including ADC, DAC, MUX/deMUX, signal conditioning and analogue filters.

• Sensor systems including, motion, environmental and imaging systems.

Power:

• Power supply design, including LDO and DC-DC implementations.

Extensive experience with low-power, battery-operated systems — from ultra-low-power designs capable of running for years on a single battery, to rechargeable Li-Ion/Li-Po systems with full battery management, including coulomb counting and wireless power transfer (Qi-compatible).

RF:

• IoT device development - vast experience implementing devices utilising Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 868 MHz / 2.4 GHz ISM band,  GSM, GPRS and 4G.

Electromechanical:

• Motor control systems consisting of linear actuators and both DC and stepper motors.

PCB Layout

CID+ certified (Advanced Certified Interconnect Designer) and with extensive experience in Altium Designer, we provide professional PCB layout services for everything from simple two-layer boards to complex high-speed, HDI, and multi-layer designs.

• Signal and power integrity.

• High-speed signal routing.

• Design for manufacture, assembly and test (DfM/DfA/DfT).

• HDI and flex PCB designs.

• EMC and regulatory compliance

If you have an existing design and just need a few small changes made, we'd be happy to help too.

3D Modelling

Using Altium Designer’s advanced 3D PCB features, we can ensure seamless integration between your electronics and mechanical design.

Altium’s 3D PCB models export directly into tools like SolidWorks and other MCAD systems, allowing product designers and mechanical engineers to accurately check fit, clearances, and assembly before any hardware is built.

We can also import STEP files of your housing into Altium to ensure accurate fit of the electronics within the housing.

This collaborative workflow reduces the risk of mechanical conflicts, speeds up design iterations, and helps deliver a better engineered product.

Manufacturing Documentation

Clear, complete documentation for a smooth path to production.

We pride ourselves on our detailed documentation,  ensuring that your design can move seamlessly from prototype to volume production.  This reduces the risk of production errors, improves yield and quality, and helps keep manufacturing costs under control.

This includes detailed fabrication and assembly drawings, BOMs with detailed sourcing information, test procedures, and build notes.

Test & Verification

We offer comprehensive test and verification services to ensure your electronics designs perform reliably and meet specification. This includes functional testing, fault diagnosis, and validation against requirements—whether for prototypes, pre-production units, or design revisions. We can help identify design weaknesses early, reduce risk, and support smoother certification and product rollout.

Design Reviews & Mentoring

We provide independent design reviews to help catch issues early, improve reliability, and ensure best practices are followed. Whether you’re a startup needing a second pair of eyes or a junior engineer looking for guidance, I offer clear, constructive feedback and one-to-one mentoring to support skill development and project success.

Workflow Advice & Templates

Efficient design workflows are the bedrock of successful electronics development. We offer practical, hands-on advice and can provide customisable templates to optimise your entire product development lifecycle.

Standardise Requirements Capture: Utilise our proven templates to define clear, unambiguous project requirements from the outset, minimising scope creep and ensuring alignment across your team.

Enhance Design Quality & Validation: Implement robust checklists and validation frameworks, including dedicated Altium project templates, to systematically verify your designs and significantly increase the likelihood of first-time board bring-up success.

Optimise Manufacturing Outputs: Streamline the handover to contract manufacturers with our comprehensive Altium and Excel templates for manufacturing data, assembly instructions, and test procedures, ensuring seamless production and reducing costly errors.

Whether you're a start-up looking to establish best practices or an established company aiming to refine your existing processes, our tailored advice and practical templates will allow you to deliver high-quality products on time and within budget.
